Memorial Day Tours @ Arlington

In 1868, General John Logan, the Commander-In-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, designated May 30th as Decoration Day, a time for the nation to mourn and decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Arlington National Cemetery became the location of the first Decoration Day National Observance. Even though the name was changed to Memorial Day and the date was changed, the tradition of gathering at Arlington National Cemetery to mourn the fallen and decorate graves continues. This tour explores the origins of Decoration Day/Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery.

The tours are narrated by Arlington National Cemetery historians. All tours start at Welcome Center at Arlington National Cemetery and require some walking. The tours of free of charge, but registration is required.

11 YEARS!

A special note from Honor Flight founder, Earl Morse:

So blessed! 11 years ago TO THE DAY, this Saturday, 21 May 2005, the first Honor Flight trip brought out 12 WWII Veterans in six tiny planes. This Saturday I’ll be at the WWII Memorial to greet 496 WWII, Korean and Vietnam Veterans from across the country. Thank God for the thousands of Honor Flight Network volunteers across America that have made the dreams of over 160,000 veterans come true. Mr. Leonard Loy was veteran #1.

The Honor Ride

Will you ride for a fallen Vietnam veteran?

Saturday June 18, 2016

In 2012, MPT embarked on a multi-year project to recognize and thank the men and women who sacrificed so much – often their very lives – during the tumultuous years of the Vietnam War. The Honor Ride is one of the ways in which we hope to honor and salute these courageous men and women.

Military veteran motorcycle organizations, associations, and groups are invited to participate in the motorcycle Honor Ride to salute fallen and missing service members of the Vietnam-era.

Who:  Vietnam veteran riders, rider-veterans of other wars, military family members (from Maryland and nearby states) are all invited! Our goal is to have 1,017 riders participate to represent and honor the 1,017 Marylanders listed as missing in action or killed in action.

What: The Honor Ride is a principal component of the opening day of the Maryland Public Television veterans tribute event, LZ Maryland.

Where: Veteran-participants will travel from their many separate locations to American Legion Post 22 in Towson, MD and then travel to and enter the LZ Maryland event at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium in formation.

When: Saturday, June 18, 2016 | Registration and staging starts at 11:00 a.m. | Departure at 2:30 p.m.

Important Notes:
This is the only year this ride will take place.
There are no rider or particpant fees with this ride.

THIS WEEKEND: Construction on Roads Around Washington National Airport

This weekend (May 13-16) at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, the eastbound 233 Bridge will be closed for construction. Honor Flight Greeters are ADVISED to allow for extra time in getting to the airport. We recommend taking the Metro if at all possible, or parking at the Crystal City parking garages (free on weekends or after 4 pm on weekdays).

The closure will last from 11:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13 to 4:00 a.m. on Monday, May 16. Vehicles attempting to enter the airport from US Route 1 in Crystal City will be detoured to the GW Parkway. Likewise, the ramp on the GW Parkway at the bridge will be CLOSED. Southbound GW Parkway traffic should use the first exit to the airport during the closure.

Friday May 20: MPT Vietnam War Stories Preview

Join Maryland Public Television (MPT) as we preview a portion of

Maryland Vietnam War Stories logo

a multi-part documentary featuring the stories of  Vietnam-era veterans, presented in their own words.

About Maryland Vietnam War StoriesFew conflicts in U.S. history have so divided the nation as did the Vietnam War. Yet, hundreds of thousands of men and women answered their country’s call to fight in this unpopular war. More than 58,000 made the ultimate sacrifice, and hundreds of thousands more were injured – physically, psychologically, or both – coming back to a nation which spat upon them or called them “baby killers.” It was indeed a painful chapter in American history.

With time comes wisdom, and as the nation’s collective consciousness admits the shameful treatment of service personnel, various initiatives have surfaced to redress the treatment of the Vietnam veteran. To recognize veterans’ sacrifices, their valor, and the price they paid in and after this conflict, MPT will air a three-hour documentary and allow veterans themselves to speak of what they have seen and how they have served.

Maryland Vietnam War Stories will premiere in three parts on May 24, May 25 and May 26 at 8 pm on MPT.

An FYI to all volunteers planning to join us at DCA tomorrow: Reagan airport will be holding an emergency drill tomorrow (4/30/16) from 9am – 12pm. This drill is entirely outside and will NOT affect our ability to greet the Honor Flights. In fact, we likely will not be impacted in any way.
