Wreaths Across America 2016

  • Thank you for your interest in helping with the placement of Remembrance Wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday, December 17, 2016. Honor Flight is not officially affiliated with this event, but many of our volunteers overlap! ew wanted to pass out all the details we have now, but the Wreaths Across America web page will always have the the most updated details available.
  • There is no other sign-up or registration required. Because there will be thousands of people there, we are not organizing a central meeting location. We encourage you to pick a section and tell those who you are meeting, to join you there. As for being able to place a wreath on a specific grave site of a friend or loved one; we expect in excess of 15,000 volunteers on the 17th and it would be impossible to “save” a particular grave site for a person to place a wreath. Our best suggestion would be for you to bring a friend or relative with you to Arlington on the 12th and arrive early so you can enter the gates starting at 8:00am when the Cemetery will be open to the Public to enter. Then have your friend or relative go directly to your friend’s or loved one’s grave site to stand by the site while you go to the closest wreath truck location to await receiving a wreath which will begin at about 9:30am.
  • There is no age limit to volunteer. We encourage families to come and share the experience. Due to the potentially high number of volunteers that may be present, for safety reasons and concerns, ANC officials have advised that the gates into Arlington Cemetery and the Welcome Center Parking Garage will be opened to the public at 8:00am. Wreath placement will begin at approximately 10:00am after a brief Opening Ceremony at the McClellan Arch Gate located just off Eisenhower Drive.

SCHEDULE
While we continue to work with the Arlington Cemetery officials on specific details, for now here is some information you can use for your planning purposes:700 Metro rail opens (system-wide)

800 Arlington National Cemetery Gates open (Visitor Parking Garage opens at 8am for ANC Family Pass and Handicap Pass ONLY)

0815-0830 (approx)Wreaths Across America Truck Convoy arrives Arlington Cemetery Main Gate

900 Wreaths Across America Opening Ceremony (McClellan Arch)

945 Wreath laying begins across cemetery

1000 Columbarium Ceremony

1100 Wreath laying ceremony at President Kennedy’s grave

1130 Wreath laying ceremony at USS Maine Mast

1200 Wreath laying ceremony at Tomb of Unknown Soldier

++++++++++++++++++++

PARKING

Again for the safety of all involved, parking at the ANC Welcome Center Main Gate Parking Facility will be very restricted. No private vehicles will be allowed to enter the Cemetery grounds until after 3:00pm on Wreath Day. There will be no General Public parking at the Welcome Center until after 1:00pm on Wreath Day. There will be Bus parking available in the Welcome Center garage for 33 buses. Due to the limited and restricted parking requirements, PLEASE PLAN TO USE THE METRO SYSTEM.

ANC officials have also advised that the ANC Welcome Center parking garage will only be for individuals with an authorized ANC Family Pass and vehicles with valid Handicap Permits which will later be directed out into the Cemetery itself through the Administration Building gate to park in the Administrative Parking lot adjacent to Section 54. Section 54 is a flatter more level section of grave sites within the cemetery more suited for individuals with mobility restrictions. We encourage individual volunteers who have mobility limitations to gather at Section 54 to help place wreaths.

There will be in excess of 60 semi-tractor trucks loaded with wreaths and thousands of volunteers located throughout the cemetery which prohibits shuttle vehicle traffic within the cemetery grounds on Wreath Day.

DONATIONS

Remember, WAA receives no government funds for what they do. WAA must rely on donations and sponsorships to complete its mission to Remember, Honor and Teach. We need you and your friends to help us reach our goal to cover all of the graves at Arlington. The cost is only $15 per wreath, a small price to honor and remember those who have given us our freedoms with their sacrifices. https://wreaths.fastport.com/donateLocation.html?page=14720

Also, Wreaths Across America (WAA) is now listed in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) program, so if you participate in the CFC program at your work, please consider selecting WAA, CFC Code #66860, when making your selection to contribute.

Introducing your OCTOBER 2016 PHOTO OF THE MONTH from the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight arrival on 10/15/16. This DC-based guardian (in red) was able to meet his Grandfather (in navy blue), a WWII Veteran, who traveled to DC for his Honor Flight! It was so moving to watch this guardian and his wife introduce their grandpa to his brand-new, one-month-old, great-grandson (the tiny one!) as he arrived in DC!

Remember Pearl Harbor @ WWII Memorial

Our Friends of the National WWII Memorial have alerted us to two events that we wanted to share with our volunteers! Honor Flight is not directly affiliated with these events, but we thought you may be interested!

Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary Commemoration
Wednesday, December 7, 2016
12:53 p.m.

Nearly 75 years ago, Imperial Japan launched a surprise military attack on United States military installations on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. The December 7, 1941 attack took the lives of 2,403 Americans and catapulted the United States into the deadliest conflict in human history.

To mark this significant date in world history, the Friends of the National World War II Memorialand the National Park Service will co-host a very special Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary Commemoration on December 7th at 12:53 p.m.at the WWII Memorial.

As part of the ceremony, Pearl Harbor Survivors, World War II veterans, and other dignitaries will lay wreaths at the “Freedom Wall” of the National World War II Memorial.

Senator John McCain, the senior United States Senator from Arizona, will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. Additionally, Senator McCain will be joined by his 104-year-old mother, Mrs. Roberta McCain, in presenting the United States of America wreath at the Memorial.

Elliott (Toby) Roosevelt III, the great-grandson of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, will read President Roosevelt’s December 8, 1941 “Infamy Speech” and offer personal remarks on behalf of the Roosevelt family.

If you are a Pearl Harbor Survivor or World War II veteran (or if you know of one) who would like to participate in the Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary ceremony at the Memorial, please email me now!

We hope you’ll join us on December 7th at the WWII Memorial!

Pearl Harbor 75th Anniversary
Candlelight Vigil and Reading of the Names
Tuesday, December 6, 2016
5:00 p.m.

Ninety minutes after Imperial Japan began its attack on Pearl Harbor, it was over.

2,008 Navy sailors were killed and 710 others wounded; 218 Army soldiers and airmen were killed and 364 wounded; 109 Marines were killed and 69 wounded; and 68 civilians were killed and 35 wounded. In total, 2,403 Americans died and 1,178 were wounded.

On the evening of December 6th at 5 p.m., the Friends of the National World War II Memorialwill host a very special Candlelight Vigil and Reading of the Names at the WWII Memorial in honor of the 2,403 men and women killed at Pearl Harbor 75 years ago.

Over the course of three hours, the name of each of these individuals who lost their lives on that fateful day will be read and remembered at the WWII Memorial.

If you would like to Read Names on December 6th,
please REGISTER NOW!

Beautiful Reunion!

Three happy brothers came in on three separate planes (from Texas, Texas, and Illinois) to surprise their Dad on the Old Glory Honor Flight yesterday! Beautiful occasion–and a beautiful day–for this family reunion! Do you have a photo to share? Email us <dca.honorflight@gmail.com>!

American Airlines GAPs

Effective this Saturday, American Airlines GAPs will be handed out at a podium near Sam and Harry’s pub — NOT at the old ticket counter. They are very nearby so you won’t miss us — hope to see you soon!

Important Information about Hurricane Matthew

We have heard rumors that some Honor Flight hubs may be changing their plans over the next several days, due to Hurricane Matthew.

Please keep an eye on our 2016 Schedule page for the most updated information.

If we get updated information, it may be very last minute. We are expecting a bit of rain here in DC, but most of the travel changes will be due to flight challenges at the home airport. Please check the website before you head out to greet any Honor Flight for the next few days. If we get enough notice, we will send out an email to those who have signed up for GAPs.

We know that several groups are still 100% coming — hope to see many of you at DCA and the WWII Memorial this week!
