WWII Flyover – Friday, May 8!
To honor the heroes who fought in the War and those on the home front who produced the tanks, ships, and aircraft that enabled the United States and its Allies to achieve victory, one of the most diverse arrays of World War II aircraft ever assembled will fly above the skies of Washington, D.C. on Friday, May 8, 2015, the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, as part of the Arsenal of Democracy World War II Victory Capitol Flyover. The flyover will include dozens of World War II aircraft flying in 15 historically sequenced warbird formations overhead. The formations will represent the War’s major battles, from Pearl Harbor through the final air assault on Japan, and concluding with a missing man formation to “Taps.” Never before has such a collection of WWII aircraft been assembled at one location, to honor the large assemblage of Veterans gathered at the WWII Memorial for a ceremony.
For more information, please check our their website: http://ww2flyover.org/about-the-flyover/
Friday, May 8, 2015: The first formation is estimated to be over the Lincoln Memorial at 12:10 p.m. (EST). The Flyover will be in the Washington, D.C. airspace for approximately 40 minutes.
Flight Path: Feet dry over Lincoln Memorial, over World War II Memorial, down Independence Avenue, turn south back to feet wet over the U.S. Capitol.
Additional VE celebrations in DC:
On Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9, the Airmen of Note will perform two concerts in commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). On May 8, 1945, the Allied forces accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender, thus ending the Second World War in Europe after five and a half years of devastating fighting. Fittingly, the Note will be donning “pinks and greens” uniforms for the performances and delving into the band’s expansive library of Glenn Miller chestnuts to pay proper homage and celebrate “the greatest generation” with true authenticity! Friday’s one-hour concert begins at 10:30 a.m. on the grounds of the beautiful WWII Memorial at the National Mall.
