Next guardian training opportunity

All Guardians must receive formal training before serving an Honor Flight, be between the ages of 18 and 65, and be able to lift 100 pounds with assistance. Guardians will walk approximately 3 miles throughout the day, and will likely be required to push a wheelchair carrying a veteran.

Next Training Session – 6.29.15

The next training session for those interested in becoming a guardian is scheduled for Monday, June 29th at 6:45 pm at the Shirlington Branch of Arlington Public Library. These sessions typically last approximately 75 minutes.

The address is: The Village at Shirlington, 4200 Campbell Ave, Arlington, VA 22206. There is no need to bring anything except a pen to take notes.

Please RSVP to Laura at honorflightguardians@gmail.com if you plan on attending. There is a maximum capacity for the room, and we need to let the library folks know ahead of time how many we will be.
Thanks for your interest in Honor Flight – hope to see many of you on the 29th!

Memorial Day

“Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.” Our American Veterans answered their calls to serve many years ago. We are so proud to represent an organization that is so dedicated to supporting and thanking those who gave so much when they were so young. We Are forever grateful for their service and sacrifice. We are proud to celebrate Memorial Day in their Honor.

WWII Flyover – Friday, May 8!

To honor the heroes who fought in the War and those on the home front who produced the tanks, ships, and aircraft that enabled the United States and its Allies to achieve victory, one of the most diverse arrays of World War II aircraft ever assembled will fly above the skies of Washington, D.C. on Friday, May 8, 2015, the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, as part of the Arsenal of Democracy World War II Victory Capitol Flyover. The flyover will include dozens of World War II aircraft flying in 15 historically sequenced warbird formations overhead. The formations will represent the War’s major battles, from Pearl Harbor through the final air assault on Japan, and concluding with a missing man formation to “Taps.” Never before has such a collection of WWII aircraft been assembled at one location, to honor the large assemblage of Veterans gathered at the WWII Memorial for a ceremony.

For more information, please check our their website: http://ww2flyover.org/about-the-flyover/

Friday, May 8, 2015: The first formation is estimated to be over the Lincoln Memorial at 12:10 p.m. (EST). The Flyover will be in the Washington, D.C. airspace for approximately 40 minutes.

Flight Path: Feet dry over Lincoln Memorial, over World War II Memorial, down Independence Avenue, turn south back to feet wet over the U.S. Capitol.

Additional VE celebrations in DC:

On Friday, May 8 and Saturday, May 9, the Airmen of Note will perform two concerts in commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). On May 8, 1945, the Allied forces accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender, thus ending the Second World War in Europe after five and a half years of devastating fighting. Fittingly, the Note will be donning “pinks and greens” uniforms for the performances and delving into the band’s expansive library of Glenn Miller chestnuts to pay proper homage and celebrate “the greatest generation” with true authenticity! Friday’s one-hour concert begins at 10:30 a.m. on the grounds of the beautiful WWII Memorial at the National Mall.

Omaha Beach: Honor and Sacrifice Screening

The screening will take place on Thursday, April 30th at 7:00 pm at the George Washington University’s Norma Lee and Marton Funger Hall.

More information about the film and screening can be found here:
Omaha Beach: Honor and Sacrifice

Please let us know if you are aware of any WWII veterans in the area that may be interested in attending the screening or should they require special seating arrangements!

NEEDED: Volunteers and Tour Guides!

Our spring season is back in full swing — we are SO excited to have our Veterans back in DC!

We need your help to give these Veterans the hero’s welcome they deserve! All are welcome–your group is welcome, you are welcome as an individual–please come anytime–as often as you can! We greet more than 100 flights a year at Reagan National Airport and even more groups at the World War II Memorial each year. Please check out our schedule to find a flight date that works for you!

We are also looking for people to step up to be bus guides for the out-of-town hubs that come through DCA. In this volunteer role, you would ride around on the buses with the Veterans all day, and provide geographic and historic information about the locations the buses pass during the Veterans’ trip. Please email dca.hf.coordinator@gmail.com if you are interested in getting more information about becoming a tour guide! We have opportunities as soon as late April!
